Do You Have Tooth Wear?
Tooth wear – often linked to malocclusion or grinding – is a slow, silent problem that can cause major damage over time. Before you know it, you may have lost significant enamel, leaving your teeth looking aged well beyond their years.
Catching it early is far less costly and complex than repairing severe damage later. Think of it like a leaky pipe – leave it, and the problem will only get worse. The sooner you act, the easier it is to restore and protect your smile.
Signs you may have tooth wear:
- Shorter, flatter, or chipped teeth
- Yellowing or translucent edges on front teeth
- Notches near the gumline
- Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods
- Rough edges or changing tooth shapes
- Fillings appearing “raised”
If you recognise these symptoms, now’s the time to take action and protect your smile’s future.

Common Factors Contributing to Tooth Wear
-
Bruxism (grinding/clenching)
-
Acidic diet and drinks
-
Aggressive brushing habits
-
Using teeth as tools or chewing hard objects
-
Medical conditions like GERD or chronic vomiting
-
Reduced saliva flow (dry mouth)

Jenn’s Smile Rehabilitation Journey
The Challenge: A Smile Holding Her Back
Jenn came to Taylor Street Dental with a broken front tooth and a desire for a natural-looking implant. On examination, we noticed a more complex issue: her lower teeth were practically biting against her upper gum, leaving no room to replace the broken tooth. Over the years, her bite had worn down her teeth significantly – she had lost around 60–70% of her tooth height and was over-closing her mouth.
We were concerned about the longevity of her remaining teeth and the potential impact on her TMJ. Fortunately, her teeth were reasonably aligned, allowing us to restore function, rebuild the damaged structures, and preserve what was left.

Step 1: Designing the Smile with Digital Smile Design (DSD)
Jenn shared her vision: “I am not happy about my broken teeth. I haven’t been smiling because of that. The length of my teeth is very short, and I’d like to improve their colour.”
Dr Dylan used Digital Smile Design to craft a plan that combined aesthetic harmony with functional precision. This allowed Jenn to see a preview of her new smile and collaborate on the final look.

Step 2: Test Drive the Smile
Before any permanent work, Jenn tried a temporary version of her smile. This “test drive” ensured her bite, tooth shape, and shade were perfect. Adjustments were made until Jenn felt completely confident in the design.

The Result: Smile Confidence Restored
Today, Jenn smiles effortlessly and enjoys showing off her new, natural-looking teeth. What was once a source of self-consciousness is now a statement of confidence and joy – and she can eat, speak, and laugh without worry.
